Doctor Who nets hat-trick

DOCTOR Who stole the show at a TV awards ceremony - while EastEnders won Best Soap for the first time in three years.

Doctor Who won Best-Loved Drama at the 2006 TV Quick and TV Choice Awards.

Its star, David Tennant, 35, won Best Actor and Billie Piper, 23, who has bowed out of the third series, took the Best Actress title for her role as the Doctor's assistant Rose.

The night's winners were BBC One with eight awards, including three for Doctor Who, compared to four for ITV.

BBC1's EastEnders won Best Soap for the first time since 2003 at the awards held at London's Dorchester hotel.

The Walford soap took a second award for Best Soap Newcomer, which was won by Charlie Clements, 19, who plays Walford's banker Bradley Branning and whose previous credits include The Bill and Popcorn.

ITV rival soap Coronation Street also took two awards including Best Soap Storyline for the Alzheimer's and eventual death of Mike Baldwin (Johnny Briggs, 70) after 30 years in the soap.

Former comic Bradley Walsh, 46, won the Street Best Soap Actor for his role as Mike's son, lothario Danny Baldwin.

Emmerdale took the gong for Best Soap Actress, with Ursula Holden-Gill, 32, winning the title for her character Alice Dingle, who died in the show after battling with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

Paul O'Grady, 51, was awarded the 10 Years At The Top Award for remaining "at the top of his game". The Lily Savage star recently made a shock defection to Channel 4, but had to postpone his return to his teatime chat show while he recovers from his second heart attack in four years.
