The runaway success of the recently revamped Doctor Who has reportedly prompted ITV to respond by launching its own prime-time sci-fi telly series.

Budgeted at a cool £6 million, Primeval will be a six-part series tracking adventurous scientists who travel back in time.

The stars of the new show have not yet been disclosed but an insider has revealed the Adrian Hodges-written epic will be a visual extravaganza.

Hodges co-wrote current BBC hit, Rome, and penned the screenplay for the lush TV adaptation of Charles Dickens' David Copperfield.

"The drama will be visually strong with the characters fighting dinosaurs and other creatures," a mole told the Daily Star.

"The central character is called Professor Cutter, whose wife - a scientist like him - vanishes while investigating black holes.

"He's determined to get her back and with four colleagues, searches through time and space."

The series is likely to air during mid-to-late 2006.

Oh, and can anyone say Time Tunnel??
