Barrowman: a sci-fi success, touch wood
A Doctor Who spin-off is in the pipe-line and is said to be a funnier, sexier, more adult version of the hit revamp of the Time Lord saga.
The 13-part sci-fi drama series, Torchwood will again be written by acclaimed scribe, Russell T Davies, and will feature one of leads from the latter parts of the last Doctor Who series, Captain Jack.
The Captain, played by John Barrowman, will be a part of a team based in Cardiff, who investigate human and alien crime.
Barrowman was delighted by the news of the series, and told BBC News: "It's going to be a dark, wild and sexy roller-coaster ride...I can't wait to explore Captain Jack even more."
Davies, the man responsible for updating the Doctor and putting him back firmly in the nation's conscience, has said the new show would be very different to Doctor Who, and won't feature any overlapping storylines.
"With
Doctor Who we often had to pretend that bits of Cardiff were London, or Utah, or the planet Zog," Davies said.
"Whereas this series is going to be 'honest-to-god Cardiff'. We will happily walk past the Millennium Centre and say 'Look, there's the Millennium Centre'."
But why the name
Torchwood? In a twist that is sure to thrill sci-fi fans everywhere, it is an anagram of 'Doctor Who', and was the name given to
Doctor Who while it was being made, to make it harder for pirates to identify tapes of it.
Filming will start early next year, and is expected to be transmitted post-watershed on BBC3.
