Davies: 'Doctor Who' team not complacent

Russell T Davies has assured Doctor Who fans that the show's team are not getting complacent.

"Oh, there's the same pressure with the new series. Definitely," the executive producer told Wales on Sunday. "It would be horrible if we just sat back and said, 'Oh, we know how to make it'. But every episode is a b****** to make. It's very difficult. If I thought it was easy I would leave.

"But you have to be careful to keep up the show's tradition. You get an awful feeling if your favourite telly show lets you down. It can really ruin your day so I have tried not to let that happen."

Davies also recognises the importance of pleasing long-term fans as well as new viewers.

"You have to keep the show's back history. If you do Dracula you want brides, crucifixes and the bats. In sci-fi it's exactly the same," he explained. "Any sci-fi story will involve a race of tin men taking on the world. So I thought what's the point of me creating The Z-Men when you have the Cybermen?

"I just wanted to bring back the big iconic monsters. There is not much more after this but there should be enough to see me out."
