New Doctor Who

Presenter: Annie Warburton

Patrick Troughton
Patrick Troughton as the Doctor

If you're a Doctor Who fan you could be forgiven for thinking you'd died and gone to heaven. Not only is ABC TV repeating the entire series from 1963 to 1989, last week the BBC announced that a new series of Doctor Who would soon be made, screening as early as 2005.

Needless to say the ABC's resident Doctor Who expert, Paul McIntyre from ABC Online, is still pinching himself in the hope he doesn't wake up and discover the recent revival has all been a hoax.

When it comes to the series, the details of which are still to be announced, there are many questions on the lips of Doctor Who fans.

Will it be a one-off series or will there be more instore?

Will the theme tune we all know and love remain the same?

Will the Doctor have his usual trade mark Police Box / Tardis?

Could the Doctor regenerate as a woman?

And most importantly – who will play the part of the Doctor?

In 1996 Paul McGann played everyone's favourite Time Lord in a made for TV feature. The film was criticised by many as being too American despite the generally warm reception that McGann received for his portrayal of the Doctor.

As to whether or not Paul McGann will return to the role – only time will tell, it always does.

Over the years many names have been put forward to become the ninth doctor. They include Ian Richardson, Richard Griffiths, Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Grant and Sean Pertwee.

Many fans of the show desperately hope McGann will agree to continue his adventures in time and space if he is asked to continue from where he left off.

Dallas Jones who is the co-founder of the Doctor Who club of Australia.

In a recent interview with Annie Warburton Dallas Jones said that the Doctor need not be a father figure but nor should he be too young.

Dallas went on to say he would be happy with an unknown actor in the role someone has no strong association with any other major roles.
